John H. Williams
It is with great sadness that we must report the passing of John H. Williams on October 14, 2011. John was an honorary life member of Western Cover Society, holding membership #656. Life membership is an honor that WCS has bestowed on but 20 of its members in its sixty-one year history.
John spent most of his life in California and at one time collected post marks from all of the California counties. He disposed of this collection of county post marks in the early 1990's for a record sum. After retiring from Chevron Oil's overseas division, he worked on compiling all of the known postal markings of California. After many years of work, in 1997 he published the two volumes set "California Town Postmarks, 1849 - 1935". This work has become the standard reference for all California postal markings. John donated all of proceeds from this effort to the Western Cover Society. Most readers do not realize that John drew all of the illustrated examples of postal marks in these volumes by hand, without the aid of a computer. John is survived by his wife Nancy.
