256. Billou #13 About the time Todd started his express Wm T. Ballou an enterprizing young fellow of French desent, arrived at San Fr. and also went to the So. Mines Where he engaged in the business of letter carring. see also History of Cal. V. VII. p149. Ballou on (???) route. Same p. 150. The first regular express is said to have been started by Ballou see Advert Ms 1 for the southern mines, late in 1849 but Todd shows that he began the business in July 1849 p. 150 Ballou joined Laugton in the Yuba Express.
